Shell capital city demonstrations, 1949

by Chris Keating on Sep.26, 2010, under TV before TV

In 1949, the Shell Oil company sponsored a series of public TV demonstrations in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, and Perth.

Using 405-line Pye equipment imported by Astor, these closed-circuit broadcasts featured many performers appearing on-camera, with newsreel footage existing of comedy duo Ada & Elsie appearing in the Sydney transmissions.

Here are a couple of images:

Skippy Australia’s First Superstar

by christine on Sep.22, 2009, under TV Programs

Watched by  over 300 million viewers  per week in 128 countries and translated into 25 languages, Skippy showed the world the beauty of the Australian bush and our exotic native animals.

The Skippy Philosophy

  1. Skippy is not a pet, she could come and and go as she pleased. (even if there were 10 kangaroos used for the role and when not being filmed she was kept in a hessian sack)
  2. Police were always your friend
  3. Mateship must always predominate as opposed to authority

(Not sure that there aren’t contradictions between 2 & 3?)

The key concept was that a little boy could roam this wonderful country that would express a freedom and a wildlife element.

These facts and many more are part of an excellent recent ABC1 documentary on Skippy  that can be viewed at: http://www.abc.net.au/tv/documentaries/interactive/skippy/

Interviewees remember:

Germaine Greer – the hypnotic quality of the landscape and the light, even though it the show itself was just dreadful.

The assistant editor  Sara Bennet recalls that women were not allowed to wear jeans or slacks – you had to wear a dress – which in the era of the micro mini meant that ‘you were actually quite indecently dressed’ , something the cameramen regularly took advantage of.

The animals may have been the stars – but their treatment by today’s standards was inhumane.

Importantly it was the beginning of putting our stories out to the world.

A number of Skippy clips including excerpts from this documentary can be viewed on YouTube:

Thanks Skippy you really were a star!
